DISCOVERING THE MIND, BODY & SPIRIT

CULTIVATING A DIFFERENCE

WITH ADULTS STRUGGLING WITH TRAUMA

AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE

WHAT IS EMDR? IS EMDR RIGHT FOR ME?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) uses bilateral stimulation to help alleviate the distress associated with disturbing or traumatic memories. Bilateral stimulation consists of back and forth eye movements or tapping. This modality can be used to treat a variety of different diagnoses including PTSD, anxiety, depression and many others.

EMDR is different from traditional talk therapy. Research has shown that EMDR works faster compared to talk therapy and it has very high success rates in treating mental health symptoms. Many clients point out using EMDR is "easier" because we continually focus on the same target versus having to find a new topic each week.

DO YOU PROVIDE OTHER TYPES OF THERAPY?

While EMDR is extremely effective with many clients facing a variety of problems, talk therapy is also a great option. Talk therapy provides an exploratory avenue for clients to develop skills to better manage and carefully evaluate their thoughts and feelings in a healthy way. In sessions, I primarily use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.

HOW DO YOU TREAT SUBSTANCE ABUSE?

I have worked in the substance abuse field with both voluntary and non-voluntary clients. I have the found the best ways to approach substance abuse is similar to how someone might treat any other mental health disorder. It requires the client to be motivated and open for change. EMDR can also be helpful in treating addiction, as there are generally underlying disturbing memories associated with substance use.
